Bringing home a goldendoodle puppy is such an exciting experience! But where do they sleep at night? NOT IN YOUR BED!!! Puppies don’t come pre-house trained, and they will wet the bed! 100% So where should your puppy sleep during the house training process? It is pretty simple, puppies need a safe, quiet and comfortable sleeping space; outside of your bed for the first few months. Follow these steps and I will help you find the perfect spot.
Step 1 Find a Location
Choose a quiet, low-traffic area in your home to set up the crate, preferably in a dark area to promote restful sleep. Good examples are a spare room in the back of the house or a laundry room. Make sure there will be no through traffic wherever you choose, and train yourself from checking on them too much as it will disturb their sleep.
Step 2 Create a Sleep-Only Zone
Goldendoodle puppies, like all dogs, instinctively seek out a den-like space for sleep. Placing a crate with a blanket thrown on top is an excellent option, as it mimics the cozy, enclosed feel of a den, but that is not all. To encourage good sleep habits, remove any toys or distractions from the crate. Think of the crate as your puppy’s personal bedroom, not a playpen! Also, resist the urge from putting a blanket or cushion inside the crate, as most puppies will want to play/tear things apart and possibly eat it, making it a choking hazard. By setting up an empty clean “den” area you are establishing a clear distinction between playtime and sleep time. Clear distinctions between the two will help your pup settle in more easily and prevent restless nights.
Step 3 Be consistent
As a new puppy parent, your goldendoodle relies on you to create a calm and consistent sleep environment. Stay predictable and put your puppy in the same crate, covered with the same blanket in the same place every night. My rule of thumb is your dog is only as trained as you are. So put the time, be consistent for your puppy, help it understand every night they go to the same safe quiet space to sleep.
Creating a quiet, cozy, den-like space is the best way to help your puppy sleep during those formative house training months.
